Granite is a natural rock formed by volcanic processes as a result of the slow cooling and freezing of a liquid mass of molten rocks inside the Earth. Granite is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar and contains, to a lesser extent, mica, amphiboles and other minerals.
Consequently, granite is strong, wear resistant and can withstand fluctuations in temperature – both ice-cold and scorching heat. That’s why granite is the perfect material for a kitchen countertop – even hot pots and pans can be placed directly on the surface without having to worry about it being damaged.
However, it should be noted that although granite is not a very porous rock, lighter shades are more porous than dark ones and can absorb liquids better. This means that while cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient for darker tones, lighter countertops should be covered with a special care product a few times a year, which ensures that the granite countertop will remain just as bright for decades to come.
